Audemars Piguet

The house that made steel cost more than gold. Gérald Genta's 1972 Royal Oak remains the most consequential watch design of the last century, and the finishing still justifies it.

What we look for

Buying Audemars Piguet well

Audemars Piguet has never been a volume manufacture, and the Royal Oak is best understood as a piece of industrial design that happens to contain a very good movement. The tapisserie dial, the eight hexagonal bolts, the integrated bracelet that tapers to nothing - all of it was drawn in a single night in 1971.

Calibre 2121 is the part collectors underrate. At 3.05mm it was the thinnest full-rotor automatic in series production for four decades, and it is the reason a 15202 wears the way it does. It left production in 2022, which is precisely why the references that carry it have stopped behaving like watches and started behaving like assets.
